Scottish National 2011
Thank you for inviting me to judge the Hamburghs, and for making Kath and myself so welcome.
The weather has had a big effect on the overall condition of the birds so it was to everyone’s credit that the entry was only slightly down on 2010.
Congratulations to Peter Harrison for having the Champion with his Gold Pencilled bantam cock breeder, and to Ian Allonby for having the Best Large with a Silver Spangled male.

Notes of interest from David Kay who judged the Club show at the National Federation in December 2009:
Journeying home up the M6 following the Club show I was planning my report in my thoughts for the Newsletter.
My mind kept going back 49 years, from when, in 1960 I judged for the first time the club show held that year at the National Poultry Show, Olympia, London. As I reflected I could not help thinking it would probably be of interest to highlight these thoughts partially in my report.
The Club show then was totally different to that of today. Searching my “Poultry Archives” I found my treasured 1960 catalogue (cost three shilling/fifteen pence) and the following statistics I hope may be of interest:
1960 2009
Entries Large Nil 29
Number of Bantam classes 5 18
Total Entries of Bantams 50 91
viz:
Silver Spangled 33 40
Pencilled (Gold) 6 30
AOC (Incl Silver Pencilled) 11 22

Included in the list of exhibitors in 1960 was Mr T G Maynard of West Malling, Kent!
As I write I feel I am becoming a little bit like an Historian so let’s fast track 49 years to Stafford 2009!
Having put certain comparative details above if ever there needed to be proof of how this breed and club has progressed this is surely a good example.
No large fowl whatsoever in 1960, the same virtually applied to Gold Spangled Bantams on only a “token appearance” of Silver Pencilled Bantams. The large birds at Stafford in all colours were an excellent display and a credit to their breeders truly illustrating their dedication to not only maintaining but improving the breed.
The same can be said for the bantams with all colours being exhibited and nearly double the entries of 1960. I found my Champion of the Club show in the winning Silver Spangled Hen - a wonderful bird - excellent type, correct spangling, not big and very fit - one of many top class birds exhibited over the years by Mr Terry Maynard. The overall thing that impressed me was the REAL QUALITY our top breeders are now producing and as I journeyed back my thoughts travelled to the birds which headed the classes which were such a joy to judge. Excellent spangles, lovely and what a big improvement:-

Pencilled Bantams especially Silver, Gold Spangles most impressive and Blacks improving every year. Yes real quality was there for all to see.
My notes would not be complete without a BIG THANKYOU to our Secretary Peter and his family for all their hard work organising the Club Show, the stand and the raffle with other dedicated Hamburgh fanciers - my sincere thanks - David Kay
